Incredible Woman #17 - Dallas Harris. Tuesday's Questions

KARA: "What is a typical day like for you and your family?"

DALLAS: "Our typical day has routine on one hand and change on the other, depending on whether our whole family is together. When my 3 disabled step-sons are here, it is all about time. Every 2 hours and 15 minutes we change diapers and feed them through their feeding tube. It is about keeping up with the truck loads of laundry because of the accidents! For the other children, it is about homemade breakfasts, the craziness of after-school schedules getting everyone where they need and want to go, homework, dates, reading together and currently about letting two 15 year olds "practice" driving my car. Help!"

KARA: "You’ve been through some very difficult trials. Can you talk about those, and tell us what helps you get through trials?"

DALLAS: "Wow. Trials. There is one thing I know about that, and that is ALL of us have them. It's in our natures to think that so and so has it worse than I do because of this or that. But the bottom line is that there is usually some kind of pain involved with trials, and pain hurts for all of us. The other thing we have in common with trials is that they can be our greatest teachers. I personally have resistance to that kind of teaching at times, but my goal is to create a place for myself to be the student and welcome with gratitude the opportunities it brings. I could write pages and pages of the blessings that have come to me from trials, but I truly believe that nothing bad can happen where an equal or greater benefit doesn't come in return. Most of this belief comes from my religious background and having faith in a God that loves me completely.

Years ago, I had suffered several mis-carriages and had gone through the circus we call infertility treatment. One day in particular, I was in my usual fetal position, sobbing after having another one, asking why-why-why??? I call it being a "why-ner" and I've had tons of practice! My mom gave me great words of wisdom. She spoke about how easy it is to be thankful for the good things in life, for our blessings. But she also spoke of the power that comes from being thankful in ALL things. It didn't mean I would jump for joy when I had a mis-carriage, but that I could focus on being grateful for the experience, the growth and will of God. It changed my life! And being grateful is not a spontaneous thing always for me, but a foundation that I find my way back to again and again. Being grateful in all things has given me power to take personal responsibility in my life--that is where true change can occur, and is the only thing I can control. I won't be a victim of anything, including trials."
